singles: the big picture, cool on your islandcomment: based in los angeles and going through her 'rock-chick phase', tori recorded her first album as part of the band 'y kant tori read'. the name is a reference to her days as a child prodigy at the peabody institute where she refused to read music instead preferring to 'play by ear'. the album was released in america in 1988 and it promptly sank without a trace, indeed atlantic only worked with her on the album for two months and then gave up. two singles were released from the album and by the second single things were so bad that they didn't bother to produce a video for the single. the album itself isn't all bad, despite tori's 'rock-chick' appearance on the album cover some of the songs are quite tame, and the etienne trilogy in particular wouldn't sound too out of place on the little earthquakes album.
quote: "i was trying to make myself into something they felt they could package, i tried to write songs for the market and some of them still have pieces of me in them."
